PARTICIPATE IN A DECEMBER ANALYSIS SURVEY
RECEIVE FIGURES TO ASSIST YOU WITH HOLIDAY 2004

We ask for your assistance to help us analyze December 2003 sales so that we all can use this information to help plan in the future. Over the past eighteen years we have noticed that the trends for daily sales vary depending on what day of the week Christmas is, and we want to update this with as large of a database as we can. It is extremely important to project sales daily during December.

In the past, our daily percentages have been good estimates to use for planning purposes for most merchants. However, times have changed dramatically over the past few years, especially with customer awareness on shipping deadlines, so we thank you in advance for your participation to help our industry.

Other issues that we want to investigate concern the impact that the recent major industry changes have made. In particular, many merchants have told us their experience with having a UPS Store nearby. Some say that their sales have increased, and others say that it has decreased. We are curious to hear what you have to say.

Also, we want to see any differences between retail stores that are open on critical Sundays versus those that aren't, in addition to those who implement extended hours. Do extended hours and days really make a difference?

We will publish the analysis in AMPC News & Ideas. The data will include a daily sales trend percentage for when Christmas falls on a Thursday, in addition to percentages of whether people were up or down on sales. Other analyses will be printed, too, along with select comments on what merchants experienced. The more participants we have, the better the analysis will be.

All participants are guaranteed anonymity. No one's name or company name will be used in the analysis or with shared information. See our Privacy Policy, since we value this for our customers and ourselves in this day and age. In addition, all participants will be sent what we currently have for daily trends when Christmas falls on a Friday to assist them with December 2004.

INFORMATION NEEDED
The information that we need is as follows.

  • A spreadsheet of what your daily sales were as a percentage of the total sales for the month of December. If possible, please email this to us in a MS Excel spreadsheet to make the analysis easier to do. Another way to submit these daily sales percentages is by completing this section of the December 2003 Analysis Form. With whatever method you use, make sure that your percentages total 100% for the month!

HOW TO SUBMIT DATA
One can submit data via email or fax. This info can be done in MS Word, Excel, and Adobe Acrobat. Continue reading, or see Holiday Planning Survey Form now.

NOTES ON SUBMITTING DATA

  • Please make certain that your daily percentages total 100% for the month. If they don't, then Houston, we have an opportunity.
  • If you send data via email, please make the subject title of your email AMPC Holiday Analysis, AMPC Holiday Survey, Holiday Analysis, or Holiday Survey. We get so much spam email that we don't want to delete your email because it doesn't have this title.
  • If you had a software crash or an electrical outage, and sales for two or more days were put into one day on your POS system or cash register, please estimate your sales percentages for the days affected. If you lump sales for several days into one day, it will affect the analysis, so we won't be able to use it.

YOUR COMMENTS

  • We will need to know whether or not you had any circumstances that affected your sales, such as road construction or extremely bad weather, since this may affect your daily percentages. This does not include competitors.
  • We want to hear anything else you have to say about how your sales may or may not have been affected in December 2003.
  • We will analyze this data for any insight that will benefit all of us.

Thank you for participating! We look forward to seeing what happened last year and to sharing it with you.
